Middle School Advisory: GRADE 8

Advisories give students a time and place where their non-academic needs can be addressed and supportive relationships can be developed. Teachers will facilitate discussions on relevant themes and provide students with a safe, non-judgmental environment. They will help students to discuss and possibly solve immediate concerns or problems, and help students in setting and reviewing goals.

The eighth grade Advisory encompasses four broad themes. Each quarter will focus on one theme and is arranged to mimic the development of an 8th grader throughout the school year. Optional topics are listed for each theme and teachers are asked to cover as many topics as they see fit. Also included are links to suggested activities and resources that may be used to facilitate discussions. Teachers are free to use other appropriate resources.

  • Community (Quarter 1): The first quarter is dedicated to help create an environment where students feel a fellowship with others as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.
  • Resilience (Quarter 2): The second quarter focuses on helping students learn the skills needed to recover from difficulties.
  • Motivation Quarter 3): The third quarter theme explores the general desires or willingness of students to do something.
  • Independence (Quarter 4): The theme of independence is intended to help students develop the skills to become self-reliant.
